When I conceived the idea for this book - almost three years ago - I felt that both patients and doctors would appreciate a guide to what Alternative and Complementary medicine was about. Many people are interested in these techniques but lack an understanding of the concepts that lies behind them. So I devised a book that not only provides a comprehensive guide to complementary therapies but also provides an understanding of the energy concepts that under energy medicine.

I also noticed that people are often overwhelmed by the choice of complementary therapies available. All therapies claim great success for a wide range of conditions. However my experience is that some therapies are better than others. Also individuals respond to some therapies better than others. It is possible to narrow down the choice of therapy by asking questions that relate to how the illness might have been triggered. The flow charts at the back of the book aim to do this. The questions on the charts are developed from the many years of experience I have in practising holistic medicine.

Since this book has been published the BMA (British Medical Association) and the House of Lords have begun to look seriously at the practice of complementary techniques in this country. This gives this growing area of medicine an opportunity to not only develop standardised training and qualifications but also gives it an opportunity to become accepted by orthodox medicine so that these two approaches to healing can stop battling against each other and find their true place relative to each other. As this happens we will get the opportunity to practise and experience holistic healing which no longer is limited by the barriers that the terms orthodox, alternative and complementary present.
